1 credit of Contemporary World Problems(CWP) is required for graduation.
The following courses meet the CWP requirement.
Contemporary World Problems:
- In this individual course, the student and teacher will determine topics of interest. Assignments may include researching and answering questions about one or more world problems, possible solutions, and activities related to the problem.
Contemporary World Problems Honors:
- The student and teacher will determine topics of interest. Assignments may include researching and answering questions about one or more world problems, possible solutions, and activities related to the problem. Higher level reading, analysis and test taking skills will be emphasized.
Current Events:
- This is an individual course that focuses on current events. Students will research current news items and the background history pertaining to the current event or issue.
Economics:
- This individual course covers the basic ideas of our economy and how it works. Topics include economic systems, money, the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services, investing, the relationship between political events and the economy as well as issues related to starting or running a business.
Economics Advanced:
- This individual course will build on the knowledge of first-year economics to study more in-depth topics in micro- and/or macro-economics. Emphasis will be on the relationship between different aspects of the political and economic systems.
Ethics:
- This individual course provides the student an introduction to the study of Ethics. The course focuses on important figures, such as Aristotle, Mills, and Kant, and provides an opportunity for the student to research and discuss the ideas of virtue, rights, duties and integrity. The student will apply their learning to current social and political topics.
Intro to Psychology:
- This introductory psychology course focuses on the study of human behavior and its roots in environment and physiology. The student will work individually with the instructor to determine which topics of interest. Topics may include: brain science, personality, perception, learning, motivation, abnormal behavior, social psychology, and other contemporary topics. The course also explores how psychological issues impact society.
Psychology:
- This individual course focuses on the study of human behavior and its roots in environment and physiology. Psychology Advanced:
- The second year psychology individual course continues to focus on the concepts of human behavior. In addition to core concepts and content areas in the field, the student will explore issues that all individuals encounter not only concerning themselves but in their relationships with friends, family, and acquaintances.
Sociology:
- This individual course focuses on the study of human relationships with emphasis on appreciation of diversity. Topics covered include: culture, socialization, social organization, institutions, change, and personal applications of knowledge.
World Cultures Contemporary:
- The student and teacher will meet individually for a survey of contemporary world cultures. Emphasis will be on comparison of cultures, traditions, and cultural issues.
World Geography:
- This individual courses focuses on the themes of geography, world cultures, location of countries, map skills, climate and vegetation of various regions of the world. Identifying where current events are taking place, whether they relate to or affect each other and us.
World History Contemporary:
- This individual course is a survey of topics in World history focusing on the latter half of the 20th century, and the 21st century. It includes the study of world cultures, major events, famous individuals, world religions, and current problems.
World History Contemporary Honors:
- This individual course is a survey of topics in World history focusing on the latter half of the 20th century, and the 21st century. It includes the study of world cultures, major events, famous individuals, world religions, and current problems. There will be an additional emphasis on outside reading, tests and note-taking.
World History Contemporary Topics:
- This individual course is a survey of topics in World history focusing on the latter half of the 20th century, and the 21st century. It includes the study of world cultures, major events, famous individuals, world religions, and current problems.
World Studies Contemporary:
- This individual course allows students to explore the history and culture of a specific country or countries. Emphasis is on contemporary events. Assignments include a variety of student-chosen activities concerning the country or topic chosen by the student.
World Religions:
- Students will explore the beliefs, traditions, and cultures of both ancient and modern religions. This course is designed to give students a broad survey of world religions and insight into contemporary religious issues.
