The courses listed here include the group courses offered at the K-8 campus for the 2011-2012 school year. A sample of the individual courses are listed here also. For many individual subjects the course description is determined by the teacher, student and parent.

Algebra I: (individual)

  • The student will meet individually with the instructor for the study of concepts in algebra including: equations, inequalities, exponents, polynomials, linear equations, functions, factoring, and rational expressions.

Art: (group)

  • Students will explore many art mediums and ideas. Art forms will include drawing, painting and ceramics.

Botany: (group)

  • This class will focus on the study of plants and their uses. It will include planting, harvesting, and cooking various plants from the garden.

Drama: (group)

  • Students will participate in cooperative learning activities through games and creative movement. Movement activities will be encouraged through role-playing, theater games, and creativity through dramatization to include body awareness, expression, and perception of self and others.

Computer Applications: (group)

  • Students will work on computer skills and applications including typing, office programs and Adobe Photoshop.

Computer Hardware: (group)

  • This group class will learn about the inner workings of computers. The class may work with networking and computer building. The exact area of focus will be determined based on the students’ interests and abilities.

Crafts and Cooking: (group)

  • Students will explore a variety of crafts and cooking that relate to the students’ interests and often tie into special occasions throughout the calendar year. In this course students will focus on measurement, food chemistry and cooperative learning.

Earth Science: (group)

  • This course is a basic study of the earth and its processes. Throughout the semester the following aspects of earth science will be explored: maps, minerals, rocks, space, tectonic plates, earthquakes, volcanoes, atmosphere, weather, climates, oceans, geologic time and fossils. Students in this course will model the process of scientific investigation through inquiries, lab work, and projects.

Geometry: (individual)

  • The student and teacher will focus on the major concepts of geometry including lines, angles, triangles, proofs, constructions, area, volume, circles, coordinates, and conic sections.

Homeroom: (group)

  • In this group class, students are involved in activities that focus on language arts, social studies, math, science and the arts. The students engage in hands-on activities and projects that require listening, observing, speaking, and questioning.

Human Biology: (group)

  • This course of study will focus on the human body. Cells, bones, and muscles are of few of the units that will be covered as part of this class. Students will work on their research, writing, and test-taking skills.

Humanities: (individual, group)

  • This individual course will be determined after meeting with the student.

Humanities, WA State: (individual, group)

  • This is a junior high Social Studies course which includes Washington State History. The focus of this course will include a variety of social studies and English topics.

Language Arts: (individual)

  • This course will be determined by the teacher and the student.

Life Science: (group)

  • This class will define the difference between living and nonliving things. We will study life systems and how that relates to our health. Other topics may include classification, basic genetics, plants, animals, cells, and current events in science.

Math: (individual)

  • This individual course will be determined after meeting with the student.

P.E.: (group)

  • In this class, students will learn and participate in a variety of sports and outdoor games. This course will also focus on teamwork, improving physical abilities, and having fun!

Photography: (group)

  • Prerequisite: Must have own SLR or digital camera.
  • In this group class, students will critique still photography including portrait and landscape. There will also be an emphasis on improving their own photographic skills and technique.

Photoshop: (group)

  • The student will work individually to apply the principles of design in creating a variety of projects using Photoshop.

Physical Science: (group)

  • This course is designed to use the scientific method to explore physical and earth sciences with a series of hands-on experiments. As scientists, they will record their observations, data, and conclusions in science journals.

Pre-Algebra: (individual)

  • The student will meet with a teacher individually for a review of the concepts of arithmetic and an introduction to the basic concepts of algebra including, variables, expressions, and simple equations.

Science: (individual)

  • This course of study will focus on the human body. Cells, bones, and muscles are of few of the units that will be covered as part of this class. Students will work on their research, writing and test-taking skills.

Social Studies: (individual, group)

  • Teacher will determine course title and description after meeting with and assessing the student.

Spanish Language & Culture: (group)

  • This course is designed to explore the Spanish culture and language through a variety of hands-on activities.

Yearbook: (group)

  • This group class will provide experiences with digital photography, Photoshop and page layout and design.
